What is a Thyristor Controller?

Conventional burst-firing control of heater loads results in fairly large temperature swings in both the heater itself and the thyristor junction switching it.  Full-cycle control is a method of distributing energy to heaters evenly and at the same time keeping the thyristor junction temperature at a reasonable level.    The RN.F.. 'SOLITRON' series from Carlo Gavazzi is designed to eliminate the problems of interfacing BMS (Building Management System) or other analogue output controllers to solid state relays (Thyristors) in heating applications.  The innovative A/D input circuitry enables full-cycle control of the heater load with linear transfer.

Acceptable control inputs are 4-20mA (RN.F.I) or 0-10Vdc (RN.F.V). The voltage-controlled versions require a 24VAC/DC auxiliary supply whilst current controlled versions require no external supply, being loop-powered.
The benefits over conventional systems include:
                     Easy installation
                     Reduced wiring
                     Lower cost
                     Space saving
                     Reduced electromagnetic emissions.
To ease ordering and installation even further this series is available in both 1 pole and 2 pole versions.

How does it work?
The analogue switching relay provides a number of full cycles, evenly distributed over a fixed period, depending on the control input. The input of the 4-20mA or 0-10 Vdc respectively corresponds to zero and full output within a period of 1.28 secs @ 50Hz (1.07 secs @ 60Hz). This principle makes the transfer characteristics fully linear. the principle operates with zero switching, thus ensuring a reduced level of radiated and wire-conducted noise. The 2-pole type has alarm LED indicator by loss of master phase.
The analogue Full Cycle Switching is not recommended for lighting control due to light flickering.

By using a modular approach to thyristor control the designer can produce small, cost-effective Heater Battery Control from a 0-10v DC signal. CSE offer a specially designed signal converter ( EVF-1 ) to be used in conjunction with the Carlo Gavazzi solid-state relays for this purpose. One signal converter can drive up to two 'solitron' relays These can be utilised to achieve kilowatt ratings up to 85kW - please contact CSE for details.
