Early morning at the Drift Golf Club on Wednesday 15th October saw overcast conditions and a heavily water-logged golf course. The weather forecast promised heavy rain later in the day but despite the gloom the CSE Cables team of John Le Grys and Chris De Franco arrived in confident mood. Coffee and bacons rolls started off the proceedings before.
Behind the Scenes, Trustee Lee Dennison announced the programme for the day; A nine-hole, mixed team Texas Scramble warm up followed by lunch followed by the main event an 18 holes stableford competition.
Chris excelled in the morning event with his team compiling the lowest score (4-under-par). Alas the only prize for winning the morning round was a curry lunch washed down with some liquid refreshment. After this interlude our amiable host explained the complicated ‘local rules’ of the PLASA 18-hole competition. Keep the TEAM BALL in play at all times and return with it to the clubhouse for an additional 5 points (this would prove key to the final placings).
Team CSECABLES John and Chris were paired with PLASA’S Chief Finance Officer Shane McGreevy. Shanes’s non- playing PLASA Chairman Ed Padget was on hand to dispense advice and carry Shanes bag! Shane himself is a newcomer to golf and this was his 3rd round of golf ever. For Golf aficionados the format was 18-hole stableford to full handicap – best 2 scores to count.
Despite playing a 3-man team in a four ball competition team CSE/PLASA had amassed 54 points after 9 holes. Star player Chris De Franco made 4 birdies ably supported by John (18 handicap) making useful pars all-round the course. Starting on the back 9, the drizzle arrived to dampen proceedings and progress was slowed as umbrellas went up and the waterproofs went on. At last we had an excuse for our poor shots! Shane (in his 3rd round of golf ever) scored some useful points to keep the team in contention. Approaching the last hole the team had scored 93 points.
Cleverly avoiding an unseen water-hazard the 18th hole yielded an additional 7 points making 100 points exactly plus 5 bonus points for retaining the team ball. As it turned out not enough to win first place (111 points), but John and Shane collected the 2nd place prize. CSE Cables would like to extend thanks to ‘Behind the Scenes’ and PLASA for organising another great charity golf day. Next time we hope the sun shines!
